Legacy Leader: Abraham Lincoln A legacy leader is someone who has left a positive and lasting impression in society due to his or her leadership qualities and/or traits. Abraham Lincoln is a prime example of a legacy leader due to the leadership traits he displayed throughout his presidency. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He exhibited great leadership qualities such as integrity, duty, and selfless service. Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and his decisive actions as commander-in-chief during the Civil War led to a victory for the Union, which created change that would forever affect the United States of America. Leadership Traits Prior to and during his presidency Abraham Lincoln was a man of the highest integrity. His integrity was beyond reproach, which led to his nickname â€Å"Honest Abe.† He often assisted in building homes, harvesting crops, and with general repairs around his community. This led to residents often selecting him to be the final decision making authority on any local races, contests and other such local events. Lincoln’s honesty, integrity, and impartiality became something people often relied on, which spanned throughout his life (Gienapp, 2002, p. 14). Even in his first U.S. Senate race against Stephen A. Douglas, Douglas knew of Lincoln’s reputation as an honest man.
